Happy days are back – well they are for us – we finally got to play at an event “live” in Fuerteventura!
Last Sunday, 20th June, was the FuerteAid Music Square Fundraiser and we were delighted to play a part. We started the event with some tunes to get everybody in the mood. Then we played between each act as they changed places on the small stage area.
The event was held to raise funds to help people who are struggling on the island because of the pandemic. Event organiser Wes Browne does a fantastic job helping people with furniture and groceries. Details can be found PLEASE CLICK HERE.
Of course, our weekly radio show on Real FM 107.9 coincided with the event so we were kept very busy broadcasting, interviewing, and recording throughout the day!
The first band up was The Electric Sixties – Katy, Bill, Daniel, and our guest drummer for the day Juan Carlos.
“The Electric Sixties is a newly formed trio, based in Corralejo, playing psychedelic and rock’n’roll classics from the grooviest era in music history – with Katy taking the lead on the vocals, Bill on vocals and electric guitar and Daniel on the Spanish acoustic. The Electric Sixties was born when Katy and Bill decided to expand on their acoustic duo by ‘going electric’ and introducing a second guitarist, Daniel, to play a new 60s themed repertoire; including music by The Beatles, The Animals, The Mamas & Papas, as well as Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, and The Rolling Stones to mention a few.”

Second, we had our dear friend and very talented musician and singer, Peter. Peter Gors can be seen regularly playing solo sets and with his band, Straight Ahead, at the Music Square, Retro Bar, and other venues throughout the area.

The event was well supported by listeners to Real FM 107.9, and it was great to meet some of them who came up to support the event from Caleta de Fuste.
SHOW 28, broadcast at the start of the event can be heard here.
SHOW 29, which features tracks from all the festival bands recorded at the event can be heard here.
Next, we had Gypsy Soul. One of the many things we love about the island is the diversity of music you can see performed, and so happy days are back with Gypsy Soul doing their thing.
We can’t tell you much about them, but boy – were they great! They played in a “Gypsy Kings” style and were a real hit with the crowd in the square. Juan Carlos joined them on drums.
East Coast folk have only got the chance to play together in the last few weeks because they are normally too busy playing solo gigs. The line-up was Des from Dublin, his wife Mary from County Wicklow, Phil Cahill from Cork, and guess who… yep, Juan Carlos on drums. They all play at Murphys Irish Bar in Corralejo.
Finally, we had two of the island’s most popular singers Katy Gillies and Neil Lole performing a high-energy set of recent hits. Happy days are back – the only disappointment was that dancing is still not allowed.
And then it was over!
The event organiser (and TOP man) Wes Browne was scheduled to finish things off, but we ran out of time so he didn’t get to sing for us this time.
Happy days are back, in all honesty, they never really left Fuerteventura. But, for us happy days are back, playing to lovely people in a special place for an important cause.
