if you are looking for a chilled location away from the crowds then an El Cotillo wedding may be for you.
Located on the northwest coast of Fuerteventura, El Cotillo is a traditional fishing village that has grown into a delightful 21st Century community. There are a few hotels and plenty of villas available for holidaymakers and the vibe is very welcoming. The town is blessed with a great selection of restaurants, bars, and cafes, many with amazing views. There are also a few shops worth checking out. If you’re looking for somewhere away from the crowds, El Cotillo should be on your list of places to consider
In the centre of the town, the original old harbour is now home to a fantastic selection of restaurants and bars. It’s very picturesque. That means there is a new harbour which is just south of the old one around a headland. Then, continuing south, you come to the El Tostón Tower, a round fort, which was built in the 1700s to defend the port from pirates and raiders. Next to the Tower is the skeleton of a Cuvier’s Beaked Whale. This is a great viewpoint south of a long run of beaches, some of which are difficult to access. You’ll usually see plenty of surfers from the first cove Piedra Playa (aka Playa del Castillo) and beyond.
There’s plenty to see to the North of El Cotillo too. There’s the famous La Concha beach and then a number of interesting coves popular with kite and windsurfers. Further along the coast is the El Cotillo lighthouse, Faro de Tostón. There is a short trail around the lighthouse area with display boards that explain the history, fauna, and landscape which is well worth a look.
We love the sunsets on the West Coast around El Cotillo. There are many wonderful places to eat or just have a drink as you watch the sun fall into the Atlantic.
As a side note, El Cotillo is also home to our adopted Fuerteventura football team, Club Deportivo El Cotillo. They usually play at midday on Sundays in the heat of the sun and the pitch is astroturf. All this makes for a very entertaining couple of hours!
